SchlummerMärchen is here: Personal stories for your evening ritual

The moment has arrived.

After two years of development, countless late nights, two house moves and a dose of chaos that only parents understand, SchlummerMärchen is finally online.

But you know what? This article is not really about me. It is about you. Your family. All the mums and dads sitting beside a child's bed at night, wondering: Where am I supposed to find the energy for another creative story?

What research tells us about evening rituals and personalisation

Regular bedtime rituals can support the transition to night-time. A 2015 study by Jodi Mindell and her research team surveyed mothers of 10,085 children aged up to five about routines and sleep.1 In their reports, more regular bedtime routines were associated with shorter times to fall asleep and fewer night wakings, among other outcomes. The study shows an association; it does not prove that a particular ritual is the cause. Personalised stories were not tested separately.

Personalisation has been studied in another context: in a small study involving 18 preschool children, later tests showed better learning of words from personalised sections of a picture book than from non-personalised sections.2 The study investigated vocabulary learning, not falling asleep. Its findings therefore cannot be used as evidence of shorter sleep onset or an effect of SchlummerMärchen.

For SchlummerMärchen, this means we create personal stories that you can make part of your evening ritual. Familiar names and interests connect them to your child's life. How your child responds and when they fall asleep are individual matters.

You know the feeling

It is 8:17 pm. Bedtime was supposed to be 7:30. Supposed to be.

Your child is in bed, eyes still wide awake. “One more story, please!” And you? You have had eight meetings, kept the household running, made three trips to nursery and forgotten to eat lunch yourself.

You have told the rabbit-and-fox story four times this week already. The dragon now has three different names because you cannot remember what you called it yesterday. And honestly, your brain feels like pudding.

I know that feeling. All too well.

My stepson Jake has ADHD. For years, falling asleep was a combat sport for him and an endurance race for my girlfriend and me. We found that stories helped him settle. So we told stories. And more stories. And more. Until we eventually ran out of ideas.

When your child appears in their own story

Imagine a bedtime story in which your child is not just any child. They are Emma. Or Leon. Or Mila. With their brown curls, beloved dinosaurs and the stuffed rabbit that always has to come along.

That is what SchlummerMärchen does.

Each story is created for your child from the details you provide: their name, age and the theme you choose or suggest.

And the best part? If you want, Mum, Dad, siblings or grandparents can appear too. Your child can experience a story with familiar loved ones beside them.

No perfect parents required

Let me be honest: SchlummerMärchen did not come about because I am the perfect stepfather. Quite the opposite.

It came about because I was exhausted. Because some evenings I had nothing left. Because I wished something could help me create that one magical moment at the end of the day without having to become a storyteller myself.

You do not have to invent the plot and wording. SchlummerMärchen creates the text and can read it aloud too.

You choose what suits your family. Read a new story first: are names and relationships correct, and does the plot fit your child? AI can produce unsuitable details too. Once you have checked a favourite story, you can listen to it together again.

That leaves room, while reading or listening, for what matters to you: being there with your child.

What to expect

Stories that fit your life

Your child loves dinosaurs? They can save the rainforest with their T-Rex friend. Your daughter is starting school and feels nervous? In her story, she can explore how exciting and wonderful new beginnings can be.

A voice that reads aloud, so you do not have to

Sometimes your voice is the loveliest thing for your child. And sometimes you are so tired that even whispering would be an effort. SchlummerMärchen can read stories using synthetic voices, so you can listen together while lying beside your child.

Stories that grow with your child

Interests and language skills change. SchlummerMärchen takes the saved age into account when creating a story; you can choose or suggest themes. You decide whether the language and plot suit your child when you read through it and try it together.

A small moment that stays with you

Do you know what moves me most?

It is not the features. Not the technology. Not even the fact that the app finally works.

It is the moment when Jake is in bed, his story is playing, and he suddenly laughs because he hears his name. Because his penguins are back. Because the story belongs to him.

That is the moment I built this for.

Not for me. For you. For all the tired parents who still want to give their children a little magic every evening.

A thank you

Before I finish, I want to say thank you.

Thank you to everyone who has accompanied me along the way. To my girlfriend Evelyn, who stood by me through every setback. To Michael, the big-hearted helper during our move. To all our early testers for their honest feedback. And thank you to Jake. For every “Dad, one more story!” For every sleepless night that brought me here. For showing me how important these small evening moments are.

SchlummerMärchenbecause parents are allowed to be tired too.

And because every child deserves a story of their own.
