Jake and the Prism of Dancing Shadows

The tools on the wall rattled like a metallic song as Jake reached for the unassuming lump of glass. The paperweight lay between old saws and rusty pliers, covered in a thick layer of attic dust. The moment his fingers touched its rough surface, something unexpected happened. A blue pulse shot through the glass, and the pulsing prism crystal woke with a quiet hum. Jake narrowed his brown eyes as the pale light of the workshop suddenly shattered into a thousand colours. His reflection in the dusty window showed a boy with tousled brown hair, his astonished face now bathed in emerald light. He stepped out into the street, but he could barely recognise the neighbourhood of hidden wonders.
“You've woken the rhythm, young one!” called a voice from above. A figure that seemed woven from stardust floated down. It was Vespera Sparkflight. Her wings looked like dragonfly wings made of liquid rainbow. She pointed to the shadows of the dustbins, which had suddenly grown feet and begun dancing happily to the crystal's beat. “But hurry, the Everyday Grey Collectors are already on their way,” she warned with a nervous flutter. Sure enough, two figures in ashen suits were creeping towards them from the end of the cul-de-sac. Wherever they stepped, the colours of the window boxes faded to a miserable concrete grey. They carried enormous vacuum cleaners, ready to suck up every trace of imagination.
“We need help!” Jake cried, running to the old stone wall in the park. There sat Master Pebblebeard, a grumpy dwarf whose beard was made of real pebbles that grated with every word. He guarded the entrance to the sewers, but today he was protecting something more important. “The boy has the crystal, Pebblebeard!” Vespera called. The dwarf heaved himself to his feet and tapped the wall with his hammer. “Then it's time to protect the foundations,” he grumbled, handing Jake a fistful of glowing pebbles. “Feed the crystal with the memory of your loudest laugh.”
Jake closed his eyes. He thought of the time he had flipped a pancake and stuck the batter to the ceiling. A mighty beam of light shot up from the prism and wrapped the entire neighbourhood in glowing violet. The Everyday Grey Collectors froze as their grey suits were suddenly covered in colourful polka dots. Their vacuum cleaners no longer puffed out boredom, but colourful soap bubbles. Vespera laughed brightly, and Master Pebblebeard allowed himself a rare chuckle that sounded like pebbles tumbling in a drum. Jake felt the warm energy vibrating in his palms. Now he understood that magic didn't come from a distant world. It lay hidden in the little things people so often overlooked. The dancing shadows bowed to him one last time before becoming ordinary silhouettes on the walls of the houses again. The crystal's pulse slowed, but Jake knew the wonders would remain. He slipped the now quiet stone into his pocket as the sun slowly sank behind the roofs of his colourful neighbourhood. Everything was just as it had always been, only much brighter.
