Jake and Hortensia Silverword’s Ink Secret

The rhythmic squeak of Jake's trainers echoed through the dark corridors of Midnight Primary School as he wondered why he had to forget his PE bag today of all days. In the distance, a strip of violet light shimmered beneath the staffroom door. Jake narrowed his brown eyes and brushed a stubborn lock of brown hair off his forehead. As he carefully pressed down the handle, he expected to find marked spelling tests. Instead, he looked into an endless expanse of floating shelves.
Hortensia Silverword stood on a ladder that seemed woven from pure moonlight. She held an inkwell that looked worryingly empty. All around her, books trembled on the shelves, their covers turning pale and grey. The letters on them dissolved like particles of soot. Hortensia sighed heavily; the dark circles beneath her eyes told of many sleepless nights spent in the service of imagination. She was no ordinary teacher. She was the guardian of the Library of Forgotten Dreams.
“The world is losing its colours, Jake,” she whispered without turning round. “If we don't replenish the ink, the children's imagination will fade for ever.” At that moment, Pantar the Bookworm crawled out of a tattered atlas. He was as big as a dachshund and wore tiny glasses on the tip of his snout. Pantar nervously munched an old bookmark. “It's indifference! The Quill of Eternal Knowledge has run dry because nobody believes in the impossible any more,” the worm grumbled in a voice like dry parchment.
Hortensia handed Jake a silver writing tool that pulsed like a little heartbeat. It was the Quill of Eternal Knowledge. “You must help me, Jake. Your talents are like undiscovered stars, but you hide them behind your modesty. Draw the dreams you had last night straight into this emptiness.” Jake hesitated. He thought of himself as just an ordinary boy who preferred playing football to writing essays. But when he saw Hortensia almost disappearing into the grey shadows of the shelves, he set the quill to work.
The Quill of Eternal Knowledge absorbed the energy of his memories. Jake drew flying whales, cities made of candyfloss and seas of liquid emerald. Pantar the Bookworm danced excitedly across the book spines as the black letters suddenly reappeared on the paper, strong and deep blue. The ink flowed from Jake's enthusiasm straight into the heart of the library. Hortensia smiled, exhausted but happy. She put a hand on his shoulder, and Jake sensed the invisible burden she carried every night to keep the spark alive in her pupils.
The teacher's magic wasn't in her red pen, but in protecting these fragile wonders. Together, they filled the last shelf before the morning sun touched the windows. When Jake left the building a little later with his PE bag, the school looked perfectly ordinary. But now he knew that behind every marked page shone a little star that Hortensia had saved from being forgotten. Jake smiled and saw that the world outside was more colourful than ever before.
