Jake and the Mysterious Cave

🚀 Journeys to distant worlds Child's age: 11 years
Jake and the Mysterious Cave

Jake had just turned eleven and already felt almost like a teenager. With his brown hair and matching eyes that always sparkled with curiosity, he loved nothing more than adventures. On this sunny afternoon, he was exploring the old quarry on the edge of the village, the one his grandparents had always told him about.

Between two mighty rock faces, Jake discovered a narrow crack he had never noticed before. His heart beat faster. “I have to explore this!” he thought, squeezing through the opening.

Beyond it lay an enormous cave, its walls covered in strange, glowing crystals. They pulsed blue and green in a steady rhythm, as though they were breathing. Jake stared in open-mouthed wonder.

“Wow...” he whispered, and his voice echoed a hundred times.

In the middle of the cave stood an old stone altar with a dusty book resting on it. Jake carefully wiped away the dust and read the title: “The Book of Forgotten Wishes”.

When he opened it, the pages began to glow all by themselves. Golden letters appeared: “Welcome, young explorer. This cave holds the unfulfilled wishes of everyone in the village. Only a pure heart can grant them.”

Jake turned the pages and read the wishes of people who had died long ago: an old man had wished for water to flow again in the village's dried-up well. A mother had hoped the sick village lime tree would grow healthy again. A child had dreamed of a playground for all the children.

“These wishes aren't for themselves at all,” Jake realised in surprise. “They're all for other people!”

Suddenly, a transparent figure appeared before himan old man with a kind face.

“You're right, Jake,” said the apparition. “The noblest wishes are those that help others. I am the guardian of this cave. For hundreds of years, I have been waiting for someone like you.”

“But what can I do?” Jake asked uncertainly.

“The crystals on the walls hold the power to grant one of these wishes. But you can choose only one.”

Jake thought for a long time. Which wish would help the village most? The well would bring water to everyone. The lime tree was the village's symbol. But a playground...

“I choose the playground,” Jake said at last. “Children are the village's future. If they're happy and play together, the village will always be full of life.”

The old man smiled. “A wise choice, young Jake.”

The crystals began to shine more brightly, and a warm breeze filled the cave. When Jake stepped outside again, he could hardly believe his eyes: a beautiful playground had appeared as if overnight on the meadow in front of the quarrywith swings, slides, climbing frames and even a little amphitheatre for performances.

The villagers marvelled at the “miracle”, but Jake kept his secret to himself. He knew that sometimes the greatest heroes are the ones nobody knows about.
