Jake and the Dreams of the Trees

Jake slipped through the narrow crack in the rock, his torch casting dancing shadows on the damp walls. Deep beneath the old oak, he had discovered a hidden entrance leading into the earth. Suddenly, an enormous cave opened up before him. Vast roots ran across its ceiling, shimmering like frozen lightning in the faint light of his torch.
“The Cave of Eternal Roots,” a deep voice rang out, echoing through the whole cavern. “No one has waited here for three hundred years.”
Jake spun round. Before him rose a majestic dragon with shimmering black scales that glittered like obsidian. His amber eyes studied the boy curiously.
“Onyxwing, guardian of the tree dreams,” the dragon introduced himself. “And you are the first human in generations to find this place.”
Before Jake could answer, a tiny glowing speck darted through the air and landed on his shoulder. The little creature had a body made of glowing mycelium and sparkled like a firefly.
“Rootwhisper, at your service!” she squeaked cheerfully. “The forest called for you, Jake!”
Jake wanted to ask how they knew his name, but then he saw the crystals. Transparent, teardrop-shaped forms hung from the roots everywhere, with misty pictures moving inside them. In one, he recognised the old oak above the cave, surrounded by playing squirrels. In another, he saw a mighty maple, its seeds whirling through the air like tiny helicopters.
“The trees' crystal dreamcatchers,” Onyxwing explained. “Every night, the trees dream of their future, and those dreams create invisible connections throughout the forest. They show which animals will live in them, which fungi will work with their roots, how they will share water and nutrients.”
Rootwhisper dashed from crystal to crystal. “But look here! Something's wrong!” Disturbing pictures appeared in several dreamcatchers: roaring flames, choking smoke, parched earth.
Jake studied the crystals more closely. His brown eyes widened as he recognised a pattern. All the fire dreams began in the same place, where the new cycle path was to be built. “The trees are dreaming of a fire,” he whispered.
“They're warning us,” Onyxwing confirmed. “But humans don't listen to dreams.”
Jake thought furiously. The workers would start laying asphalt tomorrow. The hot tar, the machines, the dry grass beside the path — it all painted a dangerous picture. But how could he convince people?
“The crystals!” Rootwhisper cried excitedly. “They don't just receive messages. They can send them too!”
Onyxwing nodded thoughtfully. “If you understand their language, Jake, you can pass on the warning.”
The dragon touched a particularly large crystal with the tip of his tail. At once, a feeling of deep connection flowed through Jake. He felt the slow pulsing of the roots, the whispering of the leaves, the trees' concern for their neighbours.
With trembling hands, Jake touched the crystal. Suddenly, he understood: the trees weren't just dreaming of their own futures. They were sharing their wisdom with one another. The network of roots was like a vast brain, storing and passing on information.
The next morning, Jake led the foresters to a particular spot along the planned cycle path. “Dig here,” he asked. Sceptically, they did as he asked and found an underground gas pipe that wasn't marked on any plan. The hot asphalt machines would have caused a disaster.
In the cave, the crystal dreamcatchers glowed peacefully. Rootwhisper danced happily while Onyxwing nodded in satisfaction. Jake had learnt that nature speaks a language older than words — a language of dreams, connections and quiet knowledge.
